ShapeGrabber Launches Fully Automated Inspection System
Performs fastest automatic inspection of formed metal and molded plastic components.
May 17, 2004, Ottawa: ShapeGrabber Incorporated today announced the launch of its new AI810 automated inspection system that brings substantial improvements in speed, ease-of-use and accuracy to the inspection process for formed metal and molded plastic components. ShapeGrabber's laser scanning technology automates the inspection process, reduces costs and improves product quality.
The AI810 is the first optical system to offer both traditional two-dimensional inspections such as hole-to-hole, hole diameter and edge-to-hole measurements, as well as three-dimensional inspection, which compares the measured part directly to a 3D CAD file, in a shop floor ready product.
KAPCO, a Boeing supplier based in Orange County, California, will be among the first to benefit from the AI810, with installation scheduled for this summer. Ron Basbas, Director of Quality at KAPCO, said: "We looked for alternatives but we did not find anything that came close to doing what the ShapeGrabber system does. We expect payback within ten to twelve months."
"The ShapeGrabber® AI810 dramatically improves inspection in terms of ease-of-use, flexibility and throughput", says Marc Bisson, President & CEO of ShapeGrabber. "For instance, in a sheet metal shop, an operator is able to inspect in 2D the location of holes punched, the presence or absence of pressed-in parts, prior to bending. After bending the part, the operator can use the AI810 again to compare surface locations and how they relate to each other directly to a 3D CAD file. Both operations are done in minutes, not days nor hours."
ShapeGrabber Incorporated, www.shapegrabber.com, a pioneer in 3D laser scanning technology since 1994, designs, manufactures and markets automated inspection systems for industrial markets. ShapeGrabber is based in Ottawa, Canada, and has installed 3D inspection systems worldwide for clients such as General Motors, HP, Ford, Toyota and Toshiba.
