Proton Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing Centre
Shah Alam, Malaysia

Background

As Malaysia’s national automobile manufacturer, PROTON is the country’s largest vehicle manufacturing company. At peak production the company’s ISO 9002 certified facility produces 200,000 automobiles per year for domestic and international markets.

The Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing Centre (RPMC), a department of PROTON’s Research and Development Division, provides stereolithography, laminated object manufacturing and rapid mold manufacturing from a core facility occupying 600 square meters and housing a host of cutting-edge rapid prototyping, CAD/CAM, finishing and manufacturing equipment.

Situation

RPMC wanted to complement its existing rapid prototyping capabilities by helping its clients:

  • Digitize surface contours for reverse engineering purposes; and,
  • Verify the accuracy of components against CAD files.

Solution

PROTON acquired the ShapeGrabber Gantry 3D Scanning System with a full suite of scanning heads (extra small, small, medium and large). Using ShapeGrabber’s 3D inspection systems, PROTON has been able to rapidly scan a variety of complex automotive and non-automotive components in support of the RPMC rapid prototyping activities. ShapeGrabber laser scanning systems have helped the company completely inspect its parts to ensure that specifications have been met and to create accurate digital models of existing components for re-engineering purposes.
